TRADITIONAL BOAT GATHERING

The traditional boat gathering is at the heart of the Feis mara na Hearadh because it celebrates the rich maritime history of the islands and showcases some beautifully crafted wooden boats.

A traditional boat will be made of wood with traditional boat building skills. It need not be classic or vintage but could have been constructed recently. Some traditional boats may have modern modifications or upgrades, for example, polysulphide mastic in joints or as a bedding compound for deck fittings; resin encased panels as a sub deck; replacement modern aluminium framed windows in a wheelhouse, but the core of the vessel will be of traditional construction in wood.

The gathering is open to all boats, of all sizes from a 10-foot tender to a 60-foot fishing vessel, local or from across the Minch.

Sea borne boats can begin to arrive from Monday 22nd July. Berths will be pre-allocated on registration; some rafting up will be required. Unless pre-booked to stay on, vessels will depart on Sunday 28th July or by arrangement on Monday 29th July.

There is a £35 registration fee per vessel, up to 2 crew (£8 supplement for each additional crew) for the Feis gathering but this gives you FREE berthing, toilets, showers and wi-fi, during the week as well as entrance to the prize giving at the Isle of Harris distillery on Saturday 27th; buffet supper in the community centre and entrance to the ceilidh dance later that evening.

Owners are asked to provide complete details and history of their vessel together with one good photograph for information sheets that will be displayed for visitors to read. It will be great if owners are around from the grand opening on Wednesday 24th on wards to be on hand to talk to visitors.

If you want to bring a boat to the Feis by trailer and launch off the slipway, or by trailer and display on the quay or hardstand then let us know. Registration fees still apply.
